Worms. A game series created back in the 90s by Team17. You may have heard of other games in the series like Worms Rumble. But Worms Armageddon is the most popular game in the series. Even though it released in 1999, it still has a great community! Let’s talk about the history, and why this game stands the test of time.
What Makes Armageddon so Good?
Worms Armageddon is the third game in the series, after Worms and Worms 2. Armageddon is built of the Worms 2 engine, and overall, they are very similar games. I prefer Worms 2 for some reasons, and Armageddon for others. Armageddon receives lots of love due to many factors. It includes missions, deathmatch, multiplayer, and even boasts online servers that are still pretty active 25 years later!
Worms 2 had some similar things, but things like the single player missions weren’t as good. You could only play with others by either being in the same room, or on a LAN server. Armageddon’s missions were better, and had true online. It has a few more weapons. Also, it is ridiculously customizable. Worms 2 had customization. Armageddon has MUCH more customization.
Pretty much everything can be changed in every in every match, from maps, weapons, ammo, damage values, and much, much more. There are so many minute options that can be changed. Not to mention, the game and its physics are pure fun. You can blow each other up with grenades, rockets, mortars, sheep, old people for some reason, air strikes, the fabled “Holy Hand Grenade” and so many more. Worms isn’t about winning. You can get blown up by your friends in so many unique ways, or blow them up, that it just results in a fun time with easy controls. Like said previously, Worms 2 has these kind of options, but Armageddon truly made them stand out. You can even give your worms voices when different things happen!
Again, Worms 2 has customization in terrain and map editing. These options let you make your own playing field, and give it a style. These styles can change a maps look. For example, instead of just having a normal playing field with grass and dirt, you can play on one that is cheese. Just, the entire playing field is cheese. Armageddon has a better map editor and more styles. There are external editors and things that make the experience much better. You can make the perfect map. This makes the game refreshing. And speaking of external editors, let’s talk about mods!
Mods, Mods, Mods!
Worms Armageddon has many different mods you can add to it, ranging from voice lines, maps, etc. Remember the map styles I mentioned earlier? You can download all sorts of those styles and different maps. They are easy to implement into the game, too. The ultimate website for these kinds of things is here. You can easily implement all of these little modifications. There are so many mods and mechanics that everyone will have a good time. All different game modes can be played or edited.
Final Thoughts
Worms Armageddon is an awesome game. Worms 2 has certain parts of it that I prefer to Armageddon, though. While the games are very similar, Armageddon beats out Worms 2 because of more features, mechanics, weapons and modding potential. It’s online gameplay is great, and is overall very fun. Worms 1 walked so Worms 2 could run . Worms 2 ran so Armageddon could fly.
